WHO NEEDS COUNSELLING?

What a pity that counselling (also referred to as therapy) remains incognito and a no-go-zone to many!

Of course mental health for decades has remained in the metaphysical realm. This is an unknown world of the dead, of spirits both evil and virtuous. The mystical nature of this world, has for long been appeased and understood only through magical powers.

In the African context, the medicine-man, sorcerer, and witch dominate. In the western world, the magician and the fortune tellers still feature.

With the increase and expansion of science however, discoveries in relation to the human person have continued to surface. This complex creature has manifested the physical, mastered by medical doctors. There is also the social, well-explored by sociologists.

The culturalisms and anthropologists have not lagged behind. We also have economists, burning the midnight oils seeking to balance scarce commodities, their distributions versus human needs and satisfaction.

Who then, explores the human cognition, behavior, and emotions?

The psychologist has a toll order. Years back when Freud Sigmund, a medical doctor sought the health of his clients, he came across an understanding of the importance of the human psyche. The power in this human component is core in the integral healing of the human person. This may as well be the notable foundation of mental health.

Malfunctioning of the human person is realized in lack of motivation, hopelessness, distress, and even trauma. Pathologies such as escape into delinquencies, drugs and to other addictions, as well as cases of depression result.

The manifestations of such extremities may be in increased physiological life-style diseases such as increased allergies and stomach ulcers, high blood pressure and even diabetes. Other reactions have resulted in rape, suicides, homicides, and even infanticides.

These devastating lists are endless.

Up until the recent decades, the counselling psychologist has focused on bringing the client from a negative position back to zero.

The concentration has been on pathology: what is wrong with the person!

This defeatist reactive position has waited for the person to regress into negativity before seeking to bring the person to normalcy; the operation of the human person at zero. With the continued development nevertheless, the wave of seeking to improve the human person from zero towards the positive, has gained popularity. Rather than wait for the person to regress into pathology, proactivity dictates that the person be accompanied towards improved human performance, increased happiness and human wellness.

This is the role of the counsellor today.

As you look at yourself, pose the question:

Are you operating at your maximum productivity?

That life is so short is such a valid reality especially to the adult and the aged; that being the case, what do you need to do to maximize your productivity as you mitigate on your draw-backs?

The answer is in COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY!

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” –WHO CONSTITUTION
